Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate (M.S.I.)
Nirmala Sisters, Mudarangady
The Background:
The Institute of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate (MSI) was started in Milan, Italy, in the year 1936 to collaborate with the missionary endeavors of the Church in general and that of PIME (Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions) in particular. Animated with an eminent apostolic spirit, ‘proclamation of the Good News’, was its main goal.
In its very infancy itself, the Institute had to face the horrors and terrors of the Second World War. After the end of the war, the first batch of six sisters got ready and they were sent to the missions of India. Thus India became the first Mission of the Institute.
Saturday, 2nd October, 1948, is engraved in gold in the annals of the Institute as this day dawned, spreading the good news that the first batch had reached their promised land, Gudivada, in the Diocese of Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.
Later they expanded their mission to Bangladesh (1953), Brazil (1954), Hong Kong (1968), Cameroon (1971), Guinea Bissau (1980), and Papua New Guinea (1988).
The MSI, popularly known as Nirmala Sisters, is an international organization of service to the mankind. They serve selflessly irrespective of caste, creed, or religion. The members of this organization serve in Italy, India, Brazil, Bengal, China and other countries for prosperity, advancement, and development in general and proclaim the Word of God among the last, least and lost of the society.
There is no doubt about the mission work being undertaken in India in a very short time.
The first novitiate of MSI was started in Bhimavaram in Andhra Pradesh in 1950. Now they have novitiates in Amalapuram and Secunderabad. The members of MSI include young and devoted women from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Bihar, Bengal and Goa. They live a life of dedication and help the poor; at the same time, they sow the seeds of God’s Love. The service of MSI include the field of education, health-care, and other development activities.
The primary and fore-most motto of MSI – Nirmala Sisters – is to share the love and affection of Mother Mary and Jesus Christ among others in a bid to make known the Word of God to the mankind.
